What is phthalate and why doesn't Soma Candles use them?

According to this CDC article, "Phthalates are a group of chemicals used to make plastics more durable. They are often called plasticizers. Some phthalates are used to help dissolve other materials. Phthalates are in hundreds of products, such as vinyl flooring, lubricating oils, and personal-care products (soaps, shampoos, hair sprays)."

We at Soma Candles and many other small batch candle makers are not using this chemical unlike some name brand companies. The less chemicals a candle has, the better we can sleep at night knowing we are not intentionally causing reproductive harm to our customers.

The companies that use this chemical claim it helps bond the wax and oil to provide a better bind and longer shelf life. Unfortunately, many name brand candles contain this chemical and a lack of regulation in our industry allows these companies to keep using it knowing it may cause negative side effects. Some may experience headaches and asthma complications. And severe cases include reproductive harm.

Our promise to our customers is to never use harmful chemicals. We have vetted our suppliers and insured they follow our strict guidelines for oils and wax.

Have a great and peaceful day,

Danny  | Soma Candles Team
